GRANITE & MARBLE

GRANITE EXPLAINED

Granite is a coarse-grained, igneous rock primarily composed of quartz, feldspar and mica. It forms before the slow crystalization of magma beneath the Earth’s surface, which allows large mineral grains to develop. This rock is known for it’s durability, strength and resistance to weathering and erosion, making it a popular choice for construction and monument work.

Granite displays a wide range of colours and patterns due to variations in its mineral composition. Common colours include grey, pink and black, often with speckled patterns created by the different minerals. its density and hardness provide excellent resistance to scratching, making it ideal for counter tops, flooring and outdoor applications.

Additionally, granite is often used for architectural elements, gravestones and decorative pieces, thanks to its appealing aesthetic qualities and ability to retain polish over time.

MARBLE EXPLAINED

Marble is a metamorphic rock that forms from the transformation of limestone through a process called metamorphism. This process involves heat, pressure and the presence of chemically active fluids which cause a calcite in limestone to recrystalize and develop a denser, more crystalline structure. The primary component of marble is calcium carbonate, although it may also contain various minerals that contribute to its color and patterns. Marble is renowned for its beauty and elegance, often featuring striking veining and a variety of colors, including white, grey, pink, green and black. The distinctive patterns arise from impurities in the original limestone, such as clay, silt or iron oxides.

Due to its aesthetic appeal and relative softness compared to granite, marble is commonly used in sculpture, architecture and decorative elements.

While marble offers a luxurious appearance, it is more susceptible to scratches and staining than harder stones, requiring regular maintenance and care to preserve its finish.
